Part IV: Life Long Learner

Chapter 15: Dynamic Experiences

Experience Map

Overview: Dynamic experiences are the primary mechanism for development, informs a mandate for proactively seeking out new and challenging experiences throughout a lifetime of growth, while also looking to provide developmental experiences to the teammates we are investing in. With this in mind, we’ve found it helpful to develop an experience map that identifies key developmental role-based and situationally-based experiences and pathways for vertical and lateral development across an ecosystem.

Chapter 16: Gift of Feedback

Gift of Feedback Guide

Reflection Guide

Overview: Growth begins with new and challenging experiences, but it doesn’t stop there. In fact, it is possible to have new experiences without enhancing our development if we don’t pause to reflect on the experience and feedback we’ve been provided or solicited. Without this step (which can be easy to skip by achievement-oriented leaders eager to move on to the next task), we risk learning the wrong lessons or having the experience without ever deriving meaning from it.

Chapter 17: Preparation

Experience Reflection Guide

Overview: Deliberate preparation helps us maximize the learning from our experiences. If we prepare, we can perform more effectively during the experience and our brains are primed for learning. We could move into our dynamic experiences cold and run the risk of becoming overwhelmed and perhaps even mentally or physically harmed – or we can invest in preparation to get the most from our experiences. There are a variety of activities a leader can leverage to prepare for an experience.

Chapter 19: Build An EcoSystem

Build an EcoSystem

Overview: Growth begins with new and challenging experiences, but it doesn’t stop there. In fact, it is possible to have new experiences without enhancing our development if we don’t pause to reflect on the experience and feedback we’ve been provided or solicited. Without this step (which can be easy to skip by achievement-oriented leaders eager to move on to the next task), we risk learning the wrong lessons or having the experience without ever deriving meaning from it.

Chapter 20: Leader Development Plan

Leader Development Plan

Overview: Lifelong learning leads to a more fulfilling, purposeful life and a greater capacity to impact the lives of others, personally and professionally. Absent an investment in lifelong learning, time passes us quickly, and we may find ourselves at the end our lives filled with regret because we weren’t as effective as we could have been, and we missed opportunities to contribute to the world through our unique gifts.
