Part III: Self Awareness & Management
Tools to support your leadership journey
Chapter 10: The Experience of Me?
Experience of Me
Conflict Modes Exercise
Interpersonal Skills
Drama Triangle
Overview: Over the course of our collaboration with leaders and teams, we have witnessed a spectrum for how leaders show up in the workplace. At one end of the spectrum is an open, curious, collaborative leader who seeks learning and development. At the other end is a closed, defensive leader who wants to win, be right, and be the expert in the room. Owning where we land on that spectrum can be a powerful way to take ownership of our self-monitoring and use it for the betterment of ourselves and all we serve. Our learning has been informed by Jim Warner’s work at Oncourse International, and his Above and Below the Line exercise.
Chapter 11: Awareness of Personality Traits and Tendencies
Introvert + Extrovert Assessment
Social Motives Exercise
My Personality Reflection
Personality Assessment Guide
Overview: Understanding our personality allows us to craft our environment in ways that let us perform optimally while acknowledging those times where it is necessary for us to step outside of our comfort zone to increase our effectiveness. Personality assessments can allow us to see ourselves more clearly, to gain clarity about our strengths that serve us and our vulnerabilities that sting us. As you consider your personality please note – there is no right, wrong, or ideal leader profile personality.
Chapter 12: Shadows
My Shadows Reflection
My Upbringing Exercise
Overview: Perhaps a more difficult aspect of self-awareness is shadow-awareness. Shadows are simply parts of our self that are repressed, that reside beneath our level of conscious awareness and are not acknowledged – aspects of our nature, good and not good, that if we leave repressed could manifest in dysfunctional behavior. These aspects can leak out and cause us to overreact in some situations. Our shadows can also prevent us from expressing our authentic selves.
Chapter 13: Emotional Intelligence
Emotional Intelligence
Emotional Intelligence 2.0
Overview: When we show up more open and curious, we are better able to leverage the power of emotional intelligence. On the journey to unlocking the components of emotional intelligence in ourselves, we must own the current areas that can be developed to unlock our superpowers. The development of our emotional intelligence skills will have direct effects with various relationships in our lives. Identifying the areas for improvement, committing to an action, and aiming for growth will enhance our superpowers.
Chapter 14: The Wake I leave
Leader Reflection
Overview: Our ability to be aware of our impact on others begins with our awareness and understanding of who we are, our personality and shadows, to craft the experience of ourselves that we would be pleased with. Uncovering and analyzing our natural energy and personality traits allows us to identify our strengths and weaknesses with an orientation toward growth. As we acknowledge our strengths, we can enhance personal and professional relationships, and add immediate value to any cohesive team. When we become more aware of areas for improvement and identify shadows in our personality and behaviors, we become more self-aware and then mindfully work on showing up in a more open, curious, and collaborative way.
